🗞️ Opening Line
Happy Friday! ChatGPT held more than half the AI assistant market every single day since it launched in 2022 — until now. The inventor of the architecture that powers every major AI model just switched teams. And China committed $295 billion to AI infrastructure. Let's close the week.
💡 The Big Update
ChatGPT Just Lost Its Majority. The AI Market Is Reshaping in Real Time.
For three and a half years, ChatGPT owned more than half of the global AI assistant market. No other single product has dominated a category this quickly or held it this long. It was the default. The category name. The thing people meant when they said "AI."
That era just ended.
ChatGPT's share of the AI assistant market dropped to 46.4% by the end of May 2026 — the first time since ChatGPT's launch in 2022 that it has held less than half the market. Gemini has climbed to 27.7% market share with 662 million monthly users, and Claude has jumped to 10.3% with 245 million monthly users. Claude's growth is the most dramatic: it had just 60.2 million monthly users in December 2025, meaning it roughly quadrupled in five months. Mean CEO's BLOG
The headline number is striking. But the story inside the numbers is more important.
ChatGPT still has over 1.1 billion monthly users — a figure no consumer app has reached this quickly in history. It didn't lose users. It lost share because the rest of the market grew faster. Gemini benefiting from being the rebuilt Siri default on Apple devices. Claude landing on the iPhone alongside ChatGPT, getting deployed across KPMG's 276,000 employees and Deloitte's 470,000, and quadrupling its user base in five months.
The platform wars we've been covering all year just showed up in the market share data.
What this means practically: the AI tool your business defaults to is no longer an obvious decision. Six months ago "use ChatGPT" was a reasonable shorthand for "use AI." Today the answer depends on your workflow, your platform, and what you're trying to accomplish. Gemini is embedded in Google Workspace. Claude is embedded in Microsoft 365. ChatGPT is still the largest single player by a wide margin.
The market is fragmenting — and that fragmentation is healthy. Competition drives capability improvements, keeps pricing in check, and means no single company can set the rules for everyone else. For businesses evaluating AI tools right now, the message is simple: the default isn't the only option anymore. Shop around.
⚡ Quick Commits
The Person Who Invented the Architecture Modern AI Runs On Just Joined OpenAI
Noam Shazeer co-authored "Attention Is All You Need," the 2017 paper that introduced the Transformer architecture underlying every major AI system today including GPT, Gemini, Claude, and Llama. He left Google in 2021, was re-hired by Google for $2.7 billion in 2024, and announced on June 18, 2026 that he is joining OpenAI as Lead for Architecture Research. The $2.7 billion Google paid to get him back lasted 22 months. Now the person who literally designed the foundation that every frontier model is built on is working at OpenAI — the company competing most directly with Google's Gemini. The architecture decisions Shazeer makes at OpenAI will shape what AI is capable of for the next decade. BuildFastWithAI Tech Startups
China Just Committed $295 Billion to AI Infrastructure
China unveiled a $295 billion, five-year AI infrastructure plan — one of the largest government AI commitments in history — representing roughly $59 billion annually in government-directed AI infrastructure spend. For context: Microsoft's 2026 AI capex is $190 billion total, and Google's is $175-185 billion. China's commitment is state capital — which operates on different timelines and risk tolerances than private investment. The US-China AI race now has a number attached to it, and it's larger than most people expected. BuildFastWithAI Tech Startups
🛠️ The Tool Drop
Claude
With ChatGPT losing its majority and Claude quadrupling its user base in five months, there's never been a better time to try it if you haven't. Claude is available free at claude.ai — and if you're already paying for Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, Claude is now embedded in both. For writing, research, analysis, and complex reasoning tasks, it's consistently strong. The Big Four deployed it across nearly a million employees for a reason. Worth trying if ChatGPT is still your default. claude.ai
🎯 The So What
ChatGPT below 50% for the first time. The transformer's inventor at OpenAI. China committing $295 billion to infrastructure. Three stories that together tell you the AI market is no longer one company's story.
The next 12 months will look very different from the last 12. The platform defaults are shifting — Apple made Claude and ChatGPT both iPhone options, Google embedded Gemini in everything, Microsoft embedded Claude in 365. The capability gap between the top models is narrowing. The price competition is intensifying.
For your business the practical takeaway is the same one it's been all year: the tools are getting better, cheaper, and more accessible every month. The question is still which workflows you're actually building around them — and whether you're doing that deliberately or waiting for someone else to decide for you.
Have a great weekend.
